Decorating with Accessories

December 20th, 2011

All décor magazines are full of great pictures of rooms so many of us can relate to. I recently picked up a magazine on my visit to Virginia as it inspired me at a glance. Flipping through the magazine at home inspired me even more and I realised the importance of accessorising. You can have the most expensive furniture but if you don’t accessorise adequately the room will look incomplete. Its not the quantity but the quality of the pieces selected that makes the impact.
On my recent visit to The Art Shoppe, the versatility of the store was more evident with the selection of furniture styles, materials and colour options available. In addition to the furniture their selection of accessories was quite interesting. I’ve chosen a few pieces that caught my eye and I couldn’t stop thinking about how I’d like to use them.

When selecting the accessories keep in mind the mood of the room, classy, casual or artsy. Think of colours you need to bring in to balance the other materials already in the room. Remember if you already have a red wall, a silver accessory will compliment it but bright art would be too overpowering. I once painted a wall charcoal grey as I got a silver leaf, which I envisioned in front of a dark wall. A friend recently commented on how it was a perfect combination.
To help you find the right accessories for your space, here are 5 quick tips:

1. Know what you want, wall art or a small piece on the coffee table. Think of a possible colour you want to bring into the room to create balance. If the room is too warm bring in light cool colours and a material that is cool.

2. Don’t rush into buying an accessory, take your time and look for the right piece of art that speaks to you. Visit art galleries or random antique stores for inspiration or even a well-known furniture store has an item just right for you.

3. Look for accessories that are good value for money. Original art appreciates over time so it makes more sense to spend $1,000 on original art than $500 on a print.

4. Think long-term when selecting a piece, especially when it’s expensive although I go with my initial gut feeling. The object should be usable in other rooms of the house if need be. I move things around all the time to give a fresh look to the home. Something as little as changing the art in frames or reframing old art can make a huge difference.

5. Mix expensive pieces with a selection from a thrift store and make your own unique collection. The idea is to let your personal style shine through, be confident with arrangements that resonate with you.

Creating Ambience

November 29th, 2011

The past week I was fighting a flu which eventually won over me, pushing me back on things to do and sapping my creative energy. Half recovered and still a little weak I perked up with a dinner invitation to Ritz-Carlton, where a friend has recently moved in.

As we drove in, the valet was waiting to park our car and the concierge to escort us to his private elevator to his condo. The space was decorated with huge pieces of art and clean-lined furniture pieces but the ambience was created by the gorgeous backdrop, soft music in the back, fireplace and the candle light, needles to say that there was great company. the guests did not want to leave although it was a Sunday night. I could not stop staring at the backdrop of lights, some brighter than other, over a dark canvas, it was almost therapeutic. I had to take a picture to share with my readers to how easy it is to create an ambience.

Let me know what you think or if you’re having a hard time creating ambience in your space feel free to give me a call at 416-629-2040.

Decor for Christmas 2011

November 22nd, 2011

Visiting a friend in Ottawa over the weekend, we were at an Italian restaurant for dinner. It was colder than most days and stepping out of the restaurant I saw the tree with lights and it hit me that Christmas is round the corner. I was not the only one who felt that January 2011 was not so far away.

It means that we have to start planning for the next month for gifts, food, house décor & of course money. We all want this time to be fun & relaxing with family. If December is the end of year at work, some of us have more on our shoulders than others, …but we still make an effort to enjoy every minute of it, isn’t that how we should spend our lives anyways.

Organizing budgets is the first step, as you don’t want to end up in debt at the start of the New Year. Make categories like cards, gifts, entertaining, clothes, travel, and décor, allocate what you would potentially spend on them. If you over spend in one area you cut down in another.

Gifts
Think outside the box for unique gift ideas in this era of consumerism give a gift of a service. An experience is more memorable and thoughtful, who doesn’t appreciate some help around the house. cleaning, organizing, decorating services are any woman’s dream.

A spa package is another great one, especially the Spas more like a retreat, which are outside the city, what better way to refresh and rejuvenate.

A two-night getaway in a nearby town … there many little towns that I want to explore around Toronto but don’t have time. A friend who lives in Prince Edward County got me excited about the lake, vineyards, art scene and local restaurants.
Another good gift idea is a wardrobe makeover. On a dear friend’s birthday we gave her flying lesson, she was ecstatic. You can give art lessons, music or cooking lessons…even writing or woodworking classes.

Décor
Decorating your home for Christmas should be enjoyable and cost efficient. Out door decor can be easy with a laser light box…it takes ten minute to light your house from outside.
Think of the new trends and a theme, incorporate them in your table decor and all around the house. A great idea is to use one colour from last year’s Christmas decor and add on a new colour for a fresh look. If you had red and green last year you can have green and white, green and bronze, or green and silver. Or scrap the green and work with red instead. Create a stunning centerpiece for the table, make sure you can remove it if need be at dinnertime. You can do something simple as painting twigs a colour of choice and hanging crystals from it or you can go all out and use fresh flowers to create a stunning arrangement.

Candles are a must have for Christmas as they create the cozy atmosphere, place them on tables only if you have little kids running around. There is a huge selection of candleholders in all price ranges. Here are a few from Crate and Barrel and Dollarama. Buy what fits your budget but don’t compromise the look.

Having Trouble Selecting a Dining Chair?

November 8th, 2011

A question from a client regarding dining chairs prompted this blog. There are lots of decisions that one has to make about colour, material and styles when decorating your home. There are so many choices to choose from but yet not enough. When she asked me which chairs to pick I had questions before I answered. The wide selection of contemporary chairs in town is available at Visitor Parking.
Here are some tips for you to pick the right dining chairs.

Purpose
First and foremost decide if this is a formal space used for dinner on special occasions or is it every weekend that you have friends over for a home cooked meal or a takeout dinner. If used every weekend then the chairs have to be durable and made for continuous use, the fabric has to be easy to clean or maybe leather. Kids tend to have accidents at dinnertime; a light fabric will soon show the spills.

Style

There are so many dining chairs to choose from, some style are more trendy and may not last for long and some styles can look good even after 15 years. For a Modern style, make sure you can live with it for years to come. Remember the fabric can be changed by re-upholstery but the style remains the same forever.

Comfort
The comfort of the chairs is based on how formal the room is. Just like the seating in a fine dining restaurant is luxurious, cosy and relaxing compared to another less formal restaurant. The seating does create a mood; if you are a casual person then don’t fuss with luxury.

Mix & Match

Anyone can go out and buy a dining set with chairs matching the table, in traditional settings that works best as the upholstery creates the drama. Modern interiors can be a lot of fun by mixing & matching the table and chairs. Although they look different when seen individually but they work well when put together. You can also bring in a punch by adding colourful chairs. Random mismatched chairs put together can also show your personal style. If you have four wooden chairs add two aluminium chairs at the head of the table and be ready for compliments.

Quality

Whatever you decide to choose never compromise on the quality and remember cheap is not always good. If your budget is limited wait for a few months till you can afford to buy good quality ones. Look for good quality for money and ask questions about the materials, finishes and construction of the chairs. Look for old chairs and have them refinished to your liking for a more customized look.

Toronto Art Show 2011

November 1st, 2011

Toronto is home to many annual international events in media & design. TIFF creates a buzz around the city providing visual stimulation to the viewers with unique and outstanding films from all over the world. This year films from 65 countries participated and nearly 400,000 attended the Toronto International Film Festival.

Another event that drew in art lovers to the city in the past four days is Art Toronto 2011. 109 fine art galleries from 13 countries along with the country’s leading cultural organizations took part in 12th annual exhibition & sale of 20th and 21st century artworks. The exhibition was oozing with ingenuity, creativity and attention to detail.

The literal meaning of ‘art‘ is the product or process of deliberately arranging items in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions and intellect. Art is also the channel for the artist to express his/her inner self. In interior design art plays a crucial role bringing in a mood, a sensation or creating drama though the use of materials. Art is the final touch in a space that complements the furniture.

I was enthused by the art in a variety of mediums, materials and unique installations; sculptures in bronze, paper Mache and silicone, stimulated the senses. I’m excited to share some artworks that caught my eye and let you experience it for yourself.

LIGHTING – A CRUCIAL PART OF YOUR INTERIOR

October 25th, 2011

The month of October brings lots of festivities one of them being Diwali, the festival of lights. I was at an early Diwali celebration on Saturday and when we lit the many little tea-lights and dimmed the lights, everyone seemed to relax. The mood in the room changed and so did the conversations.

One of the most unnoticed design elements is lighting. Often people tend to disregard the importance of lighting to create a mood or ambience.

When creating a room I take into account of how much natural light is coming into the room, the colours, materials and the purpose of the room all determine the kind of lighting appropriate for the room. We can use lighting for specific tasks, to illuminate a general area or to highlight a specific area or object in the room to create drama. Just throw a spotlight on an element in your backyard and see how much visual interest it creates. The colour of the light plays with our senses, yellow lighting is warm and cozy whereas bluish white is cold. every area of a home needs to be lit with an assortment of light fixtures and for different times of the day. With the rising cost of bills adding timers to lights around the house can save a considerable amount.

o Floor lamps – add light in any dark corner, hallway, bedroom, living room.
o Sensor lighting – perfect for out door use, back yard or hallways.
o Lamp posts – help stand out from other homes on your street and bring attention to your house
o Track lighting – is great when you want to highlight certain areas of a room or create an art gallery effect. Work better on higher ceilings.
o Solar lights – ideal for landscape lighting
o Pendant lights – commonly used foyers, dining rooms, stairways, or above kitchen islands bringing concentrated light closer to surfaces.
o Ceiling mount –
o Pot lights – a hot favourite for kitchens as it illuminates every area of the kitchen. Remember don’t over do and always add dimmers.
o Chandeliers – are not just for dining rooms anymore but can be used to add style, texture and dazzling light. They are now being used for entrances, powder room or a bedroom.
o Candles – add light and warmth to any space, the flickering flame brings life to the candle.

As a first step, look around your home and notice how its lit. If you don’t know how to light different rooms in your home call us at 416-629-2040 and we’ll guide you to create the perfect mood in your home.

For Your Next Decor Project…Be Creative

October 18th, 2011

On my visit to the Apple store this week, their display window full of post-it notes caught my eye and I was awed by the unique way of giving tribute to the creative genius & co-founder of Apple Inc., Steve Jobs. It put a smile on my face as his staff was carrying his legacy of being creative to another level.

The literal meaning of creativity is ‘imaginative ability’ and it can be applied to any area of life. When I put my creative hat on then my imagination has no boundaries, thus my projects are not predictable. Creativity does not mean a huge expense, similar to the post-it notes outside the Apple store; a simple thing done creatively has an immense impact.

At our office creativity is not only used in the design ideas but also in the use of the resources, problem solving, managing funds & timelines.

When creating interiors its my goal to create something a little out of the ordinary, which is livable and fun. The value I bring to my clients is that they get fresh ideas that suit their lifestyle and personalities, as they want a certain look within their timelines and budget. My challenge is to pull their belongings into a complete, balanced space, where the Feng Shui elements are present, and anyone who walks in finds the space interesting and distinctive. Each home has a character of it’s own, and the character of its inhabitants. The idea is to create your own unique space and not do the same that your neighbour did. Look for inspirations and tailor them to your taste.

Decorating Inspiration

October 12th, 2011

Its been a busy start to October and the month is going by fast. The gorgeous warm colours of the leaves entice us to look ahead and say goodbye to the summer. Putting away summer clothes and taking out the sweaters to keep warm in the unpredictable weather. Thanksgiving is a family event and we all look forward to spending quality time with our loved ones, how much work is put into it only a mother can understand. I have been super busy with all of the above plus my birthday last week and a wedding on the long weekend. We had all the excuses to celebrate…and we did… Five days of non stop partying, I’m glad it’s over and I’m back to work.

In the midst of all this when I see something inspiring my creative juices start flowing, sometimes small things make a huge difference. I saw these amazing selection of knobs that would transport any piece of old furniture into the current century. A knob no matter how small is like jewlery on a door; depending on the look one is trying to achieve the knob plays an important part in defining the personality. It’s one of the moat crucial decisions when designing a kitchen. Want to spruce up an old dresser, a night stand, or a powder room? These knobs can make all the difference.

It was hard to pick my favourite from these knobs from Anthropologie, the one with the bugs is perfect for an outdoor cart, a tray or even as hangers for bags. The coral and white knobs are great for sprucing up a powder room that is dull and boring; add white towles and an accent wall to give it new life.

The knobs with colorful patterns on white backgrounds can be used for a nursery or a girls bedroom. Pull in the colours from drapes and cushions and it becomes a lively room for fun activities.

You don’t have to stick with a knob per drawer, think outside the box and create a dramatic cluster of assorted knobs on one big drawer, remember creativity has no boundaries.

Let me know if this has inspired you to update your furniture and feel free to post your questions so I can help you achieve the look.

Transform your Walls into works of Art

October 4th, 2011

Murals may very well be the oldest form of decorating known to man; even cavemen adorned their walls and ceilings with hand painted drawings. Murals have been popular in every culture, all around the world at different periods of time. Today, murals have made a comeback into modern interior design and we’re seeing more of them used in indoor spaces everywhere, from offices and restaurants to nurseries and basements.

Murals are a perfect fit for any space where you’re trying to make a bold statement and add some personality. Murals can be abstract or realistic depending on the impact that you want to make and the overall mood of the space.

Traditionally, murals are outlets of artistic expression and are drawn onto the wall by artists themselves. But don’t worry, you don’t have to hire an expensive artist or take drawing lessons, nowadays custom-made murals can be bought online, shipped to your door and self-installed.

The downside however is that they can be expensive, heavy and hard to handle as they are vinyl based and if the application isn’t executed perfectly they can leave your walls with bubbles, much like wallpaper.

Larger murals can be ordered through a designer who can do the installation for you to create a flawless, professional final product. At art of Living we can install murals for you, or better yet, you can book a consultation with Naveed, who would be happy to design and paint your own original mural. This is a more authentic option, in our opinion.

The right murals can be used to open up a room and extend the space, creating the illusion of an infinity wall. This is great for small spaces and rooms in need of a focal point. You can put a mural in absolutely any room with a large, blank wall. Murals are a great way to elevate an otherwise boring space and add a punch of drama, and the best part? Simply peel it off or paint over it when you’re ready for a change.

Would you love a mural in your space but not quite sure what’s right for your space? Give us a call and we’d be happy to help you decide on the perfect mural for your space; we can even paint you your own custom mural.

Dress your Table to Impress

September 27th, 2011

There is nothing more exciting than the change of seasons when it comes to design inspiration. It feels like a new beginning each time. A new season brings new ideas, colours, trends and merchandise that open up a whole new world of possibilities to spruce up your décor and give your home a breath of fresh air. One of my favourite things to do is to stroll by store windows on a lazy afternoon and see all the creative and playful displays that adorn store-fronts.

This week I stumbled upon William Ashley’s beautiful window displays filled with classic, ornate, patterned china and it got me thinking about how fine china is becoming a thing of the past. China has that nostalgic appeal that makes you think of dinner at grandma’s house when you were a little child, but few of us today invest in it. Our lives are getting busier and busier every day, and many of us are trying to juggle a career, kids and a social life, all at once.

So who can really blame you if dinner is sometimes an afterthought, let alone the plate it sits on? People want things that are quick and easy, which unfortunately translates into cheap and disposable. Sure you can buy a dinner set at a department store for about $60 that won’t break your heart when five-year-old Tommy smashes it on the floor, but that isn’t what life’s about. Sometimes it’s worth it to splurge and spoil ourselves a little.

Make the commitment to family dinner once a week; what you define as family is totally up to you. It doesn’t matter if it’s a roast chicken or some last minute pasta – as long as the plates are fancy. Yes, they’re not usually dishwasher safe but trust me it’s worth doing the dishes once a week to keep a tradition alive. If you’re looking for something more modern and contemporary you can find something whimsical that doesn’t scream grandma.

Ashley’s has an amazing eclectic collection featuring birds, feathers, eye-popping colours, blooming flowers; they even have an eco-chic collection. The best part is you can mix and match to design your own collection. Don’t be afraid to mix colours and patterns and create something that’s truly you!

Don’t forget that another reason to invest in some great tableware is that the holiday season is just around the corner and fabulous tableware never goes out of style. Impress your guests by creating inspired table settings around your great china. With plates like these you don’t need much to wow your guests. And like I always say, quality tends to pay for itself over time, you won’t be disappointed.

Stay tuned for our Thanksgiving and Christmas decorating tips and don’t miss this year’s special edition Christmas e-book.
